The Remarkable Concept of Time

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day
~William Shakespeare

Time is fascinating. We live by time and we die by time. Time is swift, time is slow. Time hurts and time heals. But really time doesn't actually "do" anything. We merely ascribe something which we do, to time. Using time often as an excuse to our failings.

Isn't it fascinating how fast or slow time moves given our unique circumstances? It is merely our own perception, but yet it seems like so much more. When you are enjoying yourself time goes by quickly, when things are uncomfortable or boring time goes by so slowly you want to manually move the clock forward, but of course you can't, every clock is digital now.

The same can be said for upcoming events. When one dreads an event and would like to slow down time to delay that event, well let us just say that time can be cruel. That time we would like to slow down, often speeds up. The opposite can be said for anticipated events. Time goes by as constant as ever, but our perception of it changes day to day and hour to hour. Slow or fast, easy or hard, day after day.

Ball coaches occasionally will say, "We didn't lose, we just ran out of time." Meaning that given more time the game would have been theirs. For those who misuse time, or don't take advantage of the time they have, well they lose their ballgame. But those who redeem the time tend to be on the winning side of the ledger.

A brilliant, strapping, and overall great guy once said, "Let the past remain as it was, let the future become what it will, but make the best out of the present and you will neither regret the past, nor dread the future." (Guess the quoted and you'll get a prize.) Time is above all a gift. Let us treat it with respect and joy, but without fear.
